Why We Use Tables (Not Columns)

Google Docs’ column feature is designed for articles — not design.

Tables, on the other hand:

  • Lock content into place
  • Allow precise spacing and padding
  • Print cleanly every time
  • Can be reused endlessly

This is the core technique behind Google Docs Magic.

Layout 1: Clean Two-Column Base

This layout is perfect for:

  • Weekly planners
  • Focus + notes pages
  • Tasks on one side, details on the other

Step-by-Step

  1. Click Insert → Table → 1 × 2
  2. Stretch the table to page width
  3. Right-click → Table properties
  4. Set cell padding to 0.3 in
  5. Set border width to 0 pt

Pro tip: If your columns shift, check that you’re not clicking outside the table.

Layout 2: Two Columns with Section Cards

This is where things start to look very Canva.

You’ll place smaller 1×1 tables inside each column to create clean section cards.

How to Build It

  1. Start with your two-column table
  2. Click inside one column
  3. Insert → Table → 1 × 1
  4. Add a light background color
  5. Set padding to 0.25 in

Layout 3: Grid Layout (Planner-Ready)

Grid layouts are ideal for:

  • Monthly planners
  • Habit trackers
  • Kids checklists
  • Dashboards

How to Create a Grid

  1. Insert → Table → 2 × 2 or 3 × 2
  2. Set all borders to 0 pt
  3. Apply padding: 0.25–0.3 in
  4. Add subtle background colors to cells

Fonts & Color Matter (But Layout Comes First)

Once your layout is solid, styling becomes easy.

If you haven’t already:

Practice This Layout

The fastest way to learn this is to practice once.

Create:

  • A blank two-column document
  • A simple 2×2 grid layout

Once you can build these from scratch, you can create almost any planner or worksheet in Google Docs.
