Easy Sheet Pan Hamburger Steak with Mushrooms and Onions
Published on March 21, 2026 | Category: 30-Minute Meals
Sometimes you just need a "hug on a plate," and for us, that is definitely Hamburger Steak. It’s a classic Southern comfort food that usually requires standing over a greasy skillet, but I recently discovered a way to do it all on one pan!
I found the inspiration for this meal over at A Southern Soul. We are actually making this for the second time tonight because it was such a hit the first time around. It has all the flavor of a traditional Salisbury steak but with half the work and almost zero cleanup.
Our Review: A New Favorite for Two
Both my husband and I absolutely love this dish. As empty nesters, I am always looking for recipes that feel substantial but don't leave me with a mountain of dishes to do after dinner. This sheet pan method is the perfect solution.
The first time we made it, we followed the base recipe, but tonight I’m making a few small tweaks to suit our tastes. We prefer using fresh chopped mushrooms instead of the larger Portobellos, and I like to get a little creative with the seasonings in the beef patties themselves. It’s a very forgiving recipe that allows you to spice things up however you like!
Why It Works for Us:
Since it's just the two of us now, this is a great "planned-over" meal. We enjoy the fresh-from-the-oven steaks tonight, and the leftovers reheat beautifully for lunch the next day. The mushrooms and onions stay tender and juicy, making it just as good the second time around.
The Recipe: Sheet Pan Hamburger Steak
Recipe adapted from A Southern Soul
Ingredients
- ▢ 1 large onion – halved and sliced
- ▢ ½ pound fresh mushrooms – chopped
- ▢ Olive oil
- ▢ 1 teaspoon salt
- ▢ ½ teaspoon pepper
- ▢ 1 to 1.5 lbs Ground Beef (portioned into 4-6 patties)
- ▢ Your favorite steak seasonings (we love garlic powder and Worcestershire!)
- ▢ Butter pats for topping
Instructions
- Prep the Oven: Heat your oven to 415 degrees and line a sturdy baking pan with tin foil for easy cleanup.
- Season the Veggies: Place your sliced onions and chopped mushrooms on the pan. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and toss to coat evenly.
- Form the Steaks: Season your ground beef with your preferred spices and form into patties. Gently nestle each hamburger steak on top of the vegetable mixture.
- Bake: Place the pan in the oven and cook for approximately 25 minutes. You'll know they are ready when the steaks are browned around the edges and the veggies are tender.
- The Final Touch: Remove from the oven and immediately top each patty with a small pat of butter. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Final Verdict
This is a 10/10 for any busy weeknight. It’s budget-friendly, filling, and my husband asks for it constantly! If you’re looking for a crowd-pleaser that doesn't require standing over a stove, you have to try this one.
